Brief History of the British Gordon Setter Club
- 1891 A breed club called the Gordon Setter Club
was founded. Very little is known about this Club and it probably faded
out during the Great War, when all dog showing was halted.
- 1927 In April of this year a meeting took place
to propose a new society – the British Gordon Setter Club. The first
AGM was held in Edinburgh.
- 1946 After the Second World War the first AGM was
held in Blackpool on the same day as the first Championship Show of post
war days. The Kennel Club agreed to CCs for Gordon Setters. The club had
re-formed with 41 members.
- 1958 the first British Gordon Setter Club handbook
was produced.
- 1962 The British Gordon Setter Club secretary wrote
to the Kennel Club asking them to consider awarding 8 sets of CCs.
- 1963 Club subscriptions were £1:1/-(£1.05p)
or a guinea rising to 1and1/2guineas for a couple.
- 1964 The number of CCs dropped to 5 sets.
- 1968 cash in hand was £194 –11/ 11d.

- 1975 the British Gordon Setter Club held its first
Open Show at Chinnor. BIS & BB was Cairlie Cannie Lass and BD was Sh
Ch Yeoman of Cairlie. Mrs. M Rowe owned both winners.
- 1977 in the Golden Jubilee Year Club membership
reached 300. The Club held its first Championship Show at Alfreton.
- 1979 Mr G. St. G. M. Gompertz produced another handbook
– the forerunner to the annual Year Book. The British Gordon Setter
Club held the second Championship Show at Woking Leisure Centre on the 14th
October. There was an entry of 150 Gordons – the largest entry of
Gordons at any show up to that time.
- 1986 there were 528 Gordon Setter registrations.
- 1987 The British Gordon Setter Club along with the
Gordon Setter Association formed the United Gordon Setter Rescue.
- 1998 The British Gordon Setter Club moved with the
times and set up a web site.
- 1999 Club membership was 845 individual members.
- 2002 The British Gordon Setter Club celebrated its
75th anniversary.
- 2004 Gordon Setters are classed as a vulnerable
native breed by the Kennel Club.
- This classification has since been removed.
- 2007 The British Gordon Setter Club celebrates its
80th anniversary. Individual membership stands at 1273. The club continues
to thrive ably supported by Gordoners at home and abroad.
